We dig below the frost-and-clay line, set each post in concrete, and brace it plumb before the mix sets. Gates get a welded steel frame, not pickets stapled to a flimsy 2x4 - because a sagging gate is the first thing you'll resent. Build it this way once and you stop thinking about your fence at all.
